• Welcome to our class page. We are Year 3.
  • Welcome to our class page.
  • Now the children are in KS2 we will be encouraging them to be more independent, not only in organising themselves but also in their learning behaviours. We will be encouraging them to think about how they can solve problems for themselves, for example by finding spellings on spelling mats or dictionaries, or by finding resources that will help them with their maths work. We would also like them to try and remember to bring in homework, spelling and times tables books on the days they need them. Of course we will remind them and help them with this.

We will hear the children read as much as we can, and have a list to monitor how often books are changed, but we would like the children to try and remember to change their own reading books when they need to.  It will also really help if you can hear your child read 3 times a week at home. Even if they are fluent readers this provides invaluable opportunities to discuss books and develop essential comprehension skills.

You may be aware that the government has raised the expectation for all children and there is a stronger focus on grammar, handwriting and spelling. We are going to be working hard on these areas over the year and the children are already keen to start working towards their ‘pen licence’ for consistently neat, joined handwriting.  We would also ask for your support in helping your child learn their weekly spellings.

In maths we will be strengthening our knowledge of place value and learning formal written methods in order to calculate bigger numbers. The curriculum expectation is that by the end of year 3 children should be able to recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2,3,4,5,8,10 times table. Times table books will be sent home weekly so you can see how the children are progressing with this. I will be sending some further information and a list of apps and websites that can help with this next week.

We are very excited about our topic for this term, which is Ancient Egypt. Lots of our art, D&T and literacy work will be linked to this topic and we will be going on a trip to New Walk museum on the 20th November to support this. Full details of this will follow nearer the time.

In science we are learning about plants. As part of this we will be walking around the local area looking at different plants around us.

We will be starting swimming after Christmas and are very lucky to have some Rugby coaches in this term teaching us rugby skills. We are waiting to hear what day this will be on but please ensure PE kits are in school as we will be playing some team games until this starts.

Our class pets, Leroy and Jackson started school school in September. They are a couple of rescue guinea pigs who are very used to being handled by children.

We are very busy in the classroom so if you feel you can help out in any way e.g. hearing readers, helping with cooking or any other activities you have a talent for, please let us know.

If you have any questions, worries or concerns at all please don’t hesitate in coming to see us.
