Eco Team at St Francis

Our Eco Team work with our dedicated staff to plan for the way our school community can care for God’s creation. They worked with other schools in our CMAT on the exemplary students leadership programme and have made so many positive differences in our school and local community through their work.

2025-2026 Activity

We introduced the new members and agreed on the priorities for this year.

1) Food We will work towards our 3 year target, RHS Level 5 by creating a 3 bed kitchen garden to grow vegetables organically. We will share these with the community.

2) Waste We will lead teams to litter pick in the school grounds once a week so that the rest of the school is involved in our Eco Missions.

3) Recycling We will continue to improve recycling by relaunching and educating the school on the battery, pen and glue stick recycling systems.

4) Energy – We will have an energy switch off day once every term and monitor the energy we have saved.

5) Wildlife a) We will plant wildflowers and pollinator friendly plants in the school grounds – including the new planters to encourage a healthy ecosystem

b)We will design and build bird nesting boxes

c)Check and maintain the bug houses we built last year

d)Build and hang up bird feeders to support birds in the winter

Today, we sowed wildflower seeds in the margins of the school field. We measured and marked out the boundaries of our 3 bed rotation system and then spent ten minutes weeding the prayer garden.

This week it was too windy to work safely outside. We elected people to roles:

Orla – President

Seth – Vice President

Elodie – Secretary

Summer – Assistant secretary

Fabian – Treasurer

Ava – Assistant treasurer

Communication team – Oliver, Maks, Giles

Chaplaincy Liaison – Ella F, Lucy

Then we signed up to the Duracell Big Battery Hunt and discussed how to communicate the campaign to the school. We made posters to put up round the school and checked that all classes still had a battery recycling box. The communication team will be telling all of the classes about the battery hunt.

Last year, we recycled more than 2000 batteries. So far this year, we have already collected 343 batteries!

We have also ordered a free battery recycling box for reception so that anyone coming into school can recycle too.

We tidied and weeded the planters and the prayer garden. Then we moved the new benches to the sides of the prayer garden so that people can spend some quiet time with God.

Severn Trent came in to school and did an assembly for the whole school about how they treat water and make it safe for us to use. They taught us how to save water so that we don’t use more than we need to. Then the lady from Severn Trent did a workshop with Year 6 on water conservation.

We litter picked the whole school site and filled two big black bags with litter. The school looks much tidier now!
